So if you want to be able to carry out more complex exercises or a longer meditation, meditation cushions are the perfect companion. A lengthy meditation in particular can be very strenuous without a meditation cushion. Particularly suitable seat cushions help to keep the back straight and relieve the muscles. They really show their advantages, especially in a complex and time-intensive meditation practice: the spine is straightened and the muscles reach a highly relaxed state.

Important questions you should ask yourself before buying a meditation cushion

Meditation cushions from controlled organic cultivation, meditation mats or cushions with wonderful silk covers - we have a huge selection, but the most important purchase criterion is your own feeling and well-being. Many individual characteristics such as your flexibility, mobility or the preferred sitting position during meditation play an important role. The decisive factor, however, is that you can remain relaxed and pain-free on the cushion and that your knees are lower than your hip joints when sitting on the cushion.

Would you prefer to sit higher or is a simple, thin cushion enough for you?

Depending on how high the cushion is, the meditator can sit cross-legged or on his heels. A simple rule for seat height is: the taller you are, the taller your meditation cushion should be. But your ability to stay in a sitting position for a long time also influences the height, in addition to your height.

If you are around 1.80 meters tall, are a beginner or prefer a long meditation session, then your cushion should be at least 20 centimeters wide. For smaller, more agile people and short meditation sessions, a flatter one is fine.

Tip:Most meditators find a height of 12-15 cm and a diameter of 30-35 cm very comfortable. In addition, the seat height can easily be individually adjusted by removing some filling material from the cushion.

Filling: Would you prefer a softer or a harder pillow?

Filling materials include kapok fibers, cotton, spelt chaff and buckwheat chaff. The plant fiber kapok is very light and soft. Due to the instability, pillows with this filling are more suitable for advanced yogis. Beginners should choose meditation pillows with spelt chaff and buckwheat husks, as these fillings offer good stability and adapt perfectly to the buttocks due to the give of the filling material.

The meditation cushions that you greenyogashop last for several years and only need to be refilled once a year. Depending on storage and the humidity in the room, the filling material lasts between one and two years. However, if the humidity is too high, the organic spelt husks will turn a little grey after a while and should be replaced.

And which fabric cover should I choose?

High-quality materials are crucial for a long service life. However, covers should ideally be washable, especially if used regularly. What about the shape of the meditation cushion?

Meditation cushions come in a wide variety of shapes. Round, square and half-moon cushions are among the most common. An important criterion for choosing the shape is the ability to sit on the floor. Large cushions with a correspondingly larger seat, i.e. mostly round and square ones, are particularly suitable for beginners as they offer sufficient stability. Half-moon-shaped and smaller cushions are therefore more suitable for advanced practitioners as they offer less stability for long, upright positions.

There are also classic meditation cushions with a long tradition, such as the Zafu cushion. The Zafu originally comes from China and is often used there on a special seat mat, the Zabuton. They are characterized by the distinctive folds, which make it easier to sit. Zafus are more ergonomic and are suitable for those who have little experience, as you can vary the height to a certain extent depending on where you sit on the floor cushion.

Which sitting position suits which yoga cushion?

Meditation cushions promote an upright posture and protect your back. However, the correct sitting position is also important for relaxed meditation. The different cushion shapes have been specially designed for certain sitting positions. If you already know your favorite position, we recommend the following cushions:

  • If you like to sit cross-legged, crescent-shaped cushions are suitable
  • If you prefer a kneeling or seiza position then a rectangular meditation cushion is suitable
  • If you prefer to sit in the lotus position, we recommend a flat Zafu or round cushion
  • If you are a beginner and don't really know how to sit, choose a larger cushion so that you can remove some of the filling afterwards
